Jules Kounde, a defender for Sevilla who is also wanted by Barcelona, is rumoured to be a target of Tottenham.
The France international became a household name in Spain after moving there from Bordeaux in 2019. Sevilla is asking for £55 million for their No. 23, and Chelsea is rumoured to be willing to meet that demand.
Newcastle is another party with an interest in Kounde, but something big has just happened.
What’s the situation like?
Due to internal discussions about selling the centre back, Julen Lopetegui left the 23-year-old out of Sevilla’s squad for the preseason trip to Portugal.

Kounde seemed to be on the verge of departing the Spanish side.
Although Tottenham had the lead in the race, it now appears that Chelsea has surpassed them in the competition for the Frenchman.
The Sun reports that the Blues are close to signing Kounde after making an upgraded £55 million offer.
Given that Antonio Conte is still looking for a new defender, it will be fascinating to watch how the Italian manager responds to this information.
What Tottenham might do if Jules Kounde is not available
Conte has other choices if Kounde decides to relocate to west London rather than north London.
For starters, Tottenham is thought to be interested in his former defensive stalwart Alessandro Bastoni, who helped Conte win the Serie A championship at Inter Milan in the 2020–21 season.
Gleison Bremer is a another center-back that Spurs have considered, but the Brazilian appears destined for Juventus.
Crystal Palace is a jewel of England. Spurs have Kounde options, but Fabio Paratici, the director of football of Tottenham, also admires Marc Guéhi.
SportEarly opinion is that there may even be two newcomers, since Joe Rodon is eager to go and Japhet Tanganga has begun negotiations with AC Milan.
