As Antonio Conte and Jurgen Klopp square off in the Premier League today, all eyes will be on Tottenham’s matchup against Liverpool.
Tottenham hopes to further establish itself as a legitimate championship and playoff challenger this season. While Liverpool is in dire need of a victory to improve their season, they have been unable to get one. So far, the Reds’ Premier League season has been a complete disaster.
The number of Tottenham’s injured players is rising. Dejan Kulusevski may be back at work today. But now Heung-Min Son can’t play, and Richarlison is still hurt. Because of this, plus the fact that Lucas Moura is now out with an injury, Spurs have few viable offensive alternatives.
And that, according Football.London’s might lead to Antonio Conte starting Ivan Perisic with Harry Kane in the attack. This is the assertion made by Alasdair Gold in his Spurs XI preview. There, he thinks Perisic may be more effective as a wide striker than in the wing-back position for which he was recruited.
Obviously, this will have no effect on Perisic. Over the course of his career with Bayern and Inter Milan, the Croatian veteran has played there innumerable times. He can play in a variety of positions, which is likely why Conte wanted to bring him on board.
To the Best of TBR’s Knowledge, Perisic is more than capable of contributing to Tottenham as a wide forward.
While Perisic’s contract lists him as a wing-back, he can easily switch to an offensive position if necessary.
Prior to this, he excelled in that position for both club and nation. Spurs supporters may rest easy knowing that Conte has no qualms about employing them in that capacity.
It might perhaps turn out for the best, in an unusual manner. Attacks from Perisic and Sessegnon down the same side might leave Trent Alexander-Arnold even more exposed. Spurs and Conte will be aware of the Liverpool player’s struggles this season.
