Ashworth could repeat Burn masterclass at NUFC with “exceptional” gem who “Howe loves” – opinion

Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing Brighton and Hove Albion‘s on-fire wing-back Solly March and his potential arrival at St James’ Park could prove to be a repeat of the masterclass that saw Dan Burn join in 2022.

According to 90min, both manager Eddie Howe and sporting director Dan Ashworth are huge admirers of the Brighton and Hove Albion winger.

Bailey spoke further about Newcastle’s interest in the winger on the Talking Transfers podcast, saying:

“In terms of one of their homegrown talents, Solly March. He has 18 months left on his deal. He is arguably Roberto De Zerbi’s favourite player. He has gone up a level. Brighton are aware of this, they know there is some interest.

“Dan Ashworth likes him at Newcastle, Eddie Howe loves him, he’s that sort of character isn’t he, he’s exactly the sort of player you could see under Eddie Howe. And he’s also on the radar of Gareth Southgate.”

The Seagulls have been in sensational form since the World Cup, winning comprehensively in four of their last five games, with their one blemish coming in a 4-2 home defeat by Arsenal.Read the latest Newcastle transfer rumours and news!

March has been key to their surge up the table, registering a phenomenal four goals and two assists in his last four Premier League appearances, so it is easy to see why Newcastle are reportedly keen.

Two of those goals came in Brighton’s 3-0 demolition of Liverpool last weekend, in what was described as an “exceptional” performance by Daily Express journalist Ryan Taylor.

Although Miguel Almiron has been a star performer in Howe’s side this season with nine top-flight goals to his name, the other wingers in Newcastle’s squad have struggled for goal contributions, with Allan Saint-Maximin, Josh Murphy and Ryan Fraser boasting just two goals and three assists between them.

Therefore, with a Champions League spot certainly on the cards, March could be a big signing this month as Howe looks to bolster his attacking options, and it could be as successful as the move for Burn in January last year.

The giant defender would join from the Seagulls and has been a regular at both centre-back and left-back since then, featuring 38 times for his boyhood club in all competitions since then.

Given the success of that Ashworth signing, it is easy to see why Newcastle want to return to Brighton again this month for another signing, and given March’s recent form, he could be a phenomenal addition to Howe’s squad.
