Villa almost pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the season when they raced into a 2-0 lead away to Manchester City on the last day of the Premier League season, with Matty Cash and Philippe Coutinho scoring.
With Villa leading and momentum on their side, a sending-off and free-kick on the stroke of half-time might have radically changed the game, and there doesn’t appear to be much evidence to suggest this wasn’t a foul.
Watkins’ rushing in behind was clearly causing a problem for Fernandinho at this point, and with the midfielder playing center-back yesterday at the age of 37, it’s no wonder he no longer has the speed in his legs.
