Everton are said to be “confident” in gaining James Tarkowski’s free transfer after Aston Villa appeared to have cooled their interest in the midfielder recently.
Tarkowski, 29, was relegated to the Championship with Burnley this season but is expected to leave the club when his contract expires this summer.

Aston Villa News: Gerrard target set to change mind amid strong Everton interest
Sky Sports first reported that Villa had begun negotiations with Tarkowski. They have apparently cooled their interest in the centre-back this week, as Villa manager Steven Gerrard appears to be prioritizing the acquisition of a left-sided defender to enhance his defensive options.
Everton are now “confident” of signing Tarkowski after he returns from holiday, according to the Daily Mail, as he seeks a return to Gareth Southgate’s England side ahead of the 2022 Qatar World Cup.
Everton and Villa were the frontrunners in the battle to sign the free agent, but with Villa reportedly moving on to other targets, a transfer to Goodison Park now appears to be a certainty.
