At St James’s Park, the Brazilian played 70 minutes as Newcastle and St. Louis drew 1-1 after Alexander Isak’s penalty equalised Philip Billing’s second-half goal. Since the 3-3 tie against Manchester City last month, it was his first Premier League start.
Guimaraes was a late substitution in the Carabao Cup victory against Tranmere Rovers after Man City, which was the game when it was first believed he sustained his hamstring injury.
However, the 24-year-old said that while it took longer than anticipated for the injury to be discovered, it was really sustained versus City.
No, I was hurt playing against Man City, said Guimaraes. “I attempted to participate in the Tranmere game.
“I really felt it when I had to run. For me, I didn’t even realise I was hurt; I simply thought I was sleepy. I met with the doctor after the Tranmere game and requested a scan. When we first saw the scan, we believed the injury to be minor, but it was actually severe.

“When you are hurt, your muscles are being rested, and it is never easy to understand what is going on. But for now, my physical fitness is what matters most.”
Guimaraes was happy to be back in the lineup but disappointed with the outcome and his own mediocre effort.
He said, “I feel better and okay. Naturally, this was my first game following my injury and 20 days.
“I tried to get ready as fast as I could. Morning, noon, and night, I spent at the club working out to stay in shape. Therefore, I am grateful to the physiotherapists for all of their assistance. I’m now attempting to regain my groove.
“That is typical when you are wounded, but I think I played an average game—not great, not horrible.”
The midfielder said, “It was frustrating, and we dropped two points at home once more. We feel let down.
“We made an effort, but it fell short. We must now make an effort to enjoy ourselves, but when we return, we must consider alternative strategies to alter the situation.
