Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes received the North East Player Of The Year award for 2022 on Sunday evening.
Bruno was given the accolade at the North East Football Writers’ Association annual dinner, and celebrated the achievement alongside his family.
It was an incredible first year on Tyneside for Bruno, who joined Newcastle last January for £35million from Lyon.
After a bedding in period, Bruno quickly established himself as the most important player at St James’ Park, and he has had a huge role in the incredible season we are currently having. Without him, we probably wouldn’t have made it to the League Cup final or be in contention to qualify for the Champions League.
The 25-year-old is a worthy winner, and was undoubtedly the star of North East football for the previous calendar year. He came out on top ahead of Sunderland striker Ross Stewart and Toon teammate Kieran Trippier.
After the event, the Brazil international took to his official social media channels to deliver a message to the Newcastle supporers.
He wrote on Twitter: “When I said yes to Newcastle, I was sure I was choosing a big project. From the bottom of my heart, I didn’t expected to live the wonderful things I’m living here. Respect for the team, love for the fans and each day feeling more at home. Thanks for everyone that made possible to live all of this.”View Tweet
Even more to come from Bruno
It is wonderful to read about how much Bruno loves life in Newcastle. He is massively settled in the area, adored for his efforts on the pitch and shining in black and white.
But the most important thing is that he keeps mentioning the Toon ‘project’. Bruno knows this is not going to happen overnight. A project can take time, especially one as ambitious as ours.
When Bruno joined the club, we were in the relegation zone. Now we have been to Wembley and are challenging for a place in Europe’s elite competition.
It has been a remarkable 12 months, and our progress must not be forgotten despite our recent dip in form.
With players like Bruno in the team, we have the potential to keep getting better and better. He believes in what is happening at St James’ Park, and is loving life as a Newcastle United player.
