Marcos Alonso met down with a group of journalists during the Club World Cup to explore what may happen next for him at Chelsea.

“I’ve always had attention from other teams,” the Spaniard revealed during a frank interview. “But I’m pleased to remain here to earn these types of titles.” “I still have a year and a half left on my contract.” It’s a question about [what happens next] to which I may or may not have an answer.

“It’s not simply about what I want.” But, as I already stated, I will always strive to give my all and remain focused on the next game. Why not [remain and sign a new contract]? I’m extremely pleased here.”

Alonso joined Chelsea from Fiorentina in the summer of 2016 and has since won the Premier League, Champions League, Europa League, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup, and Club World Cup. The 31-year-old will have won everything if the Blues win the Carabao Cup later this month.

Only Cesar Azpilicueta has accomplished this with Chelsea. And if Alonso can duplicate that, it will be a monument to both his ability and his endurance. He has appeared on his way out of Stamford Bridge on several occasions.

After an altercation during a 3-3 draw with West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns, the Spain international spent three months on the sidelines and on the periphery of the team. It was only last season that Alonso was sidelined by Frank Lampard.

Alonso was taken off at halftime after being blamed for two of the Baggies’ goals that day. What transpired afterwards is unclear, but when in Abu Dhabi, the winger put up his version of events.

“I was upstairs watching the game when West Brom security informed me I couldn’t be here with five minutes to go, so I ran downstairs to the changing room,” he explained. “Then, before the players returned, I went to the coach after the referee blew the [full-time] whistle.

“I didn’t want to leave for any unpleasant reasons, but I had a shower at halftime, a shower upstairs, and then I simply left. I was not happy, of course, with how the game went and everything but it was not any intention to do that.

“After that, I immediately spoke with my teammates. Everyone was OK if someone was insulted or angered by something. The narrative was made by you [the media], but there was nothing like this.”

With the arrival of Thomas Tuchel, Alonso returned to the first team, although behind Ben Chilwell at left wing-back for much of the German’s stay.

However, the England international’s unlucky knee ligament injury in November forced Alonso back into the team, and he started 11 Premier League games in a row.

It’s strange to think that Alonso started the season ahead of Chilwell, and his early-season performances ensured he kept his spot. As a result, just claiming that the Spaniard isn’t of the caliber to generate for Blues is incorrect.

However, his performance in the absence of Chilwell over the last two months has been woeful. He’s been sluggish and defensively dubious.

Tuchel’s January decision to go to a back four and start Malang Sarr at left-back hasn’t rekindled Alonso’s interest. At the Club World Cup, this was demonstrated against Al Hilal.

Even during semi-final, Alonso was a bothersome figure. He didn’t have the same danger in the last third as usual, and his protective flaws were revealed on several occasions.

However, with Tuchel determined to play his favorite 3-4-2-1 formation in the final against Palmeiras, Alonso was set to return to the starting lineup. That was until the squads were announced, at which point the Spaniard was substituted by Callum Hudson-Odoi, who went on to assist Romelu Lukaku’s first goal.

Tuchel and his training team made a big decision to start Hudson-Odoi, a 21-year-old winger, instead of Alonso, which was vindicated considering the Spaniard’s semi-final performance.

The major question is where this puts Alonso in the pecking order, and the answer will come in the coming weeks. It would be a mistake to write out the 31-year-old – as history has shown – but his time at Chelsea may be drawing to a close.
