As an alternative, Liverpool pursued Diogo Jota. He was the same age as myself and offered similar benefits on the field. The Portuguese hadn’t erupted at Wolves as Werner had in his nation, but he seemed like a good fit.

Thomas Tuchel’s system, unlike Klopp’s, does not allow for wide forwards. Last summer, the German coach purchased Romelu Lukaku for £97 million because he thought his club lacked a real No.9.
Werner’s situation at Stamford Bridge has improved recently, but he might have gone much farther at Liverpool if he had followed in the footsteps of Firmino, Mane, Salah, Jota, and now Luis Diaz. He’ll line up as an opponent on Saturday afternoon, but he’ll undoubtedly wonder what could have been.
