Conte makes bold claim giving hope for Tottenham’s future after Man City victory
After Tottenham’s 3-2 victory against Manchester City on Saturday night, Antonio Conte made an intriguing comment about his team.
Spurs are now seventh in the Premier League, seven points ahead of fourth-placed Man United, with three games remaining.
It was always going to be difficult for the Lilywhites to leave the Etihad Stadium with three points, especially following three defeats in the league, the most recent of which came against Southampton and Wolves at home.
Tottenham responded positively, put in a strong performance, and earned a much-needed three points against Pep Guardiola’s side for the second time this season.
Conte’s Spurs team has had a rollercoaster ride since his arrival, dealing with strong opponents, a Covid outbreak, and a mixed bag of results.
Four first-team players left the capital in January, while two newcomers, Rodrigo Bentancur and Dejan Kulusevski, arrived.
Former Juventus teammates both played 90 minutes against Pep Guardiola’s side, with the Swede scoring his first goal for Spurs in the opening five minutes of the match.

The Lilywhites only needed five shots on target to score three goals and earn three points in a game when City had 71 percent possession and 21 shots.
Conte lauded his team’s effort after the game and provided some insight into how Spurs won.
“It was definitely an emotional game.” It was a thrilling match. We had a great game. In his post-match interview with Sky, the Italian stated, “We followed a strategy.”
“When we were defending, our first thinking was how to attack, which I believe we accomplished, and we had chances to score further goals against a tremendous, wonderful squad.”
“We’re putting in a lot of effort to try to enhance everything.” This sort of game must inspire us to believe in the work we’re doing and, without a doubt, to keep giving it our all.
“We have a lot of room for development, especially considering we have a lot of young players to develop and experience… but we’re not afraid to put in the effort.”
Conte has been explicit about the work that still has to be done since his arrival in the capital, and he has maintained the same message.
“Playing against Manchester City after three losses in a row [in the Premier League] wasn’t easy, but it’s all part of the journey.” I continue to say the same thing again and over. Conte remarked, “It’s a process.”
The Tottenham manager went on to describe how the victory had boosted the team’s confidence and allowed them to have faith in what they were doing.
“First and foremost, I despise losing. If I had to say it was wonderful to lose three games, it would be because I despise losing, but it was also necessary that [this] was the reaction because maybe the past two games we deserved more than to lose the game, but the Premier League is extremely difficult,” Conte added.

“In order to continue to advance your level, you must battle hard in every game and contribute everything you have.”
“We’re working extremely hard,” the Italian continued, “and I’m loving working with this group of guys.”
Conte has been greeted warmly by fans and players since his arrival, and he has previously demonstrated his ability to change players and win league titles with Chelsea, Juventus, and Inter Milan.
Everyone at Tottenham is hopeful that the 52-year-old will repeat his success at N17 and help the club break an almost 14-year trophy drought.
Chelsea knocked the Lilywhites out of the Carabao Cup, but they still have a chance to win silverware this season, with their next FA Cup match against Middlesbrough coming up in early March.
Conte’s admission in his post-match interview may give fans some optimism for the future.
“We have a lot of room for improvement, and these are a terrific collection of guys,” he remarked. “This group, in my opinion, is one of the greatest groups of players I have ever worked with.”
The Italian hasn’t been hesitant to accept that his new squad has to improve, but he’s had success at past clubs and has converted players into good teams.
Conte’s admission that his current team is one of the greatest he’s ever worked with can only give fans optimism for what the future holds.
Who’s to say he can’t improve this Spurs squad and offer what they’ve been waiting for for so long if he’s backed by the likes of Daniel Levy and Fabio Paratici and given time to replicate his previous success with his new side?
