Drogba reacts as Azpilicueta makes history after Chelsea’s Club World Cup triumph
Didier Drogba, a Chelsea star, has praised captain Cesar Azpilicueta after the Spaniard created history after the team won the FIFA Club World Cup on Saturday.
Azpilicueta created history this weekend when he led Chelsea to a 2-1 victory against Palmeiras in the FIFA Club World Cup final.
With Chelsea’s triumph over Palmeiras, Azpilicueta has become the first player in club history to win every major trophy available at Stamford Bridge, including the Premier League, Champions League, Europa League, FA Cup, League Cup, Super Cup, and Club World Cup.
Following the game, Drogba interrupted Azpilicueta’s interview with Chelsea’s in-house TV station to congratulate his former teammate on the club’s FIFA Club World Cup victory.
“This man [Azpilicueta] has won more titles in two years than we have in ten!” Drogba said.
Meanwhile, Azpilicueta expressed his pride by saying, “I’m incredibly proud.” We’ve traveled a long way to get here.
“We know how tough it is to win this trophy, so this is a moment to be proud of and cherish.” 2012 was a difficult year for us, and it took us more than nine years to recover. We lost out on the cup in 2012, and we didn’t want to do so again.
“This time, the gold medal is the winner, and the silver medal is the runner-up. I double-checked that I wasn’t returning with the same medal color. It was a challenging game. It is not simple to be a world champion. We demonstrated our commitment to the group.
“When I first came in 2012, I had no idea the path I would embark on. I am really delighted to represent Chelsea both on and off the field as captain.
“It feels great to win this trophy because it is the first time in our history.” The club, as well as the owner, deserved it, and I am glad that we were able to achieve it.
