Everton and Leeds United may have new hope of signing Matheus Cunha with Wolverhampton Wanderers yet to tie up a deal for the Atletico Madrid attacker.
Reports last week suggested that Cunha was moving closer and closer to becoming a Wolves player.
However, The Athletic now suggest that there are doubts over whether Wolves can really meet Atletico’s demands for Cunha.
A proposal of around €50million (£43million) has been offered for Cunha and Atletico teammate Felipe, but no deal has been done.
Other clubs are now gaining real hope that they can swoop in and hijack Cunha’s move with Premier League rivals queueing up.
Everton have allegedly admired Cunha for a long time now and are keen to get into the race and bring the Brazilian to Goodison Park.
The money could be beyond Everton too though, whilst Leeds United have a ‘serious interest’ in signing Cunha in 2023.
The Whites chased Cunha under Marcelo Bielsa and are seemingly keen to get into the race themselves.
Leeds and Matheus Cunha – short history
Leeds were desperate to land Cunha back in the summer of 2021.
Sky Germany first reported the interest with Hertha Berlin seeking around £26million for the attacker.
Kicker then added that Marcelo Bielsa had actually made contact with Cunha months earlier in an attempt to lure him to Elland Road.
UOL in Brazil suggested that Bielsa personally asked Leeds to sign Cunha for him – but they were left very disappointed.
Cunha, 23, instead joined Atletico and showed promise last season with six goals and four assists in 29 games, with just eight as a starter.
Bielsa may have left Leeds but their interest in Cunha hasn’t gone anywhere.
Jesse Marsch desperately needs a striker but there should be questions over whether Cunha can really play as a lone striker in Marsch’s 4-2-3-1 setup.
Cunha is a versatile forward but not really a classic number nine, so maybe Marsch sees Cunha playing something of a false nine role with Leeds still keen to sign him.
