Everton News: Mike Riley calls Lampard to say sorry as PL hands Apology to Everton
The Latest Everton News coming from the toffees camp reveals, Mike Riley accepted his mistake and rendered his apologies.
Everton chairman Bill Kenwright and manager Frank Lampard have received an apology from referees director Mike Riley after they were refused a penalty at the weekend.
The Toffees were enraged when midfielder Rodri seemed to get away with an apparent handball call in Saturday’s 1-0 loss at home to Manchester City, with both the on-field officials and VAR electing not to penalize the violation.
According to reports on Monday, Everton filed an official complaint and requested an apology from Lampard and his team as a result of the dispute.
Riley, the general manager of the Professional Game Match Official Limited, has now phoned the club to apologize for his company’s failures on Merseyside.
According to The Athletic, Everton’s chief executive officer, Denise Barrett-Baxendale, has raised ‘grave concerns’ about the calibre of officiating in other Everton matches this season.
Jonjo Shelvey, a Newcastle midfielder, received only a yellow card for a strong push on Anthony Gordon during Everton’s 3-1 loss at St James Park last month.
‘It wasn’t a good challenge,’ Lampard stated after the game. It’s not worth spending too much time thinking about it. It’s a reddish-brown color.
‘It was obviously putting a player’s safety in jeopardy, and that’s usually the criterion they use.’
The decision not to award a penalty against Southampton player Oriol Romeu for a probable handball in their 2-0 defeat at St Mary’s 10 days ago was also likely to irritate the Toffees.
Richarlison also had a penalty against Tottenham in November overruled, which occurred during Lampard’s predecessor Rafael Benitez’s ill-fated reign.
However, the ultimate verdict in the Rodri handball appeal incident denied Everton the opportunity to equalize just minutes after Phil Foden had broken the visitors’ stalemate.
Rodri looked to handle the ball with his arm during the incident, with the contact occurring below the so-called ‘t-shirt’ line.
This is the regulation that the Premier League implemented to try to clarify handball rulings, despite the fact that referee Paul Tierney missed the moment of contact.
The judgment was sent back to Stockley Park’s VAR centre, but Chris Kavanagh determined that Tierney’s handball was not worthy of another look on the pitchside monitor.
Lampard accused VAR official Kavanagh of ‘at best incompetence’ after the game.
‘We’ve lost a point because of a professional who can’t perform his job well,’ Lampard added in an emotional rant. ‘At best, it’s ineptitude.’ Who knows what may happen in the worst-case scenario?
‘Hi, my name is Chris Kavanagh.’ It’s entirely up to Chris. On the day, the referee [Paul Tierney] knew it was a penalty. He couldn’t see it, though.
‘The decision is fantastic, incredible, and it deprives us of the chance to obtain what we deserve.’ It would have taken less than five seconds to figure out that it was a penalty. He should have instructed the referee to either give it or examine it.
‘They haven’t given him a penalty since it hits him on the arm in an uncomfortable position.’ At home, I have a three-year-old daughter who can tell you it was a penalty.’
Everton are currently just one point above the relegation zone after their defeat and Burnley’s draw against Crystal Palace.
They’ll be diverted from such worries in midweek when they play Boreham Wood in the FA Cup fifth round on Thursday, before returning to Premier League action on Monday against Tottenham.
‘At best, it’s ineptitude; at worst, who knows?’ says Lampard.
