The Toffees are in desperate need of cash, but the new partnership has sparked controversy, with gambling campaigner James Grimes of The Big Step telling BBC Sport that it was “massively tone deaf.”
The government is set to update laws around the industry’s sponsorship of football later this month, but Sky Sports pundit Campbell doesn’t see why this deal is being prioritized over others.
“Listen, laughs the ethical problems will always come up because there are always people for and against,” he told Goodison News exclusively.
“The reality of the matter is Everton struggled last season, and to have a shirt sponsor ready to put that much money in, even if they’re outside the top six, is a wonderful job.”
“The reality is that it’s a betting firm, casino, or betting platform, and that’s how it’s going.”
“You keep an eye on it; this is how it’s going to turn out.”
“Again, you may call [up] about ethical [concerns] and all that, but we could investigate everything and become ethical about it.”
“There would be some advantages and disadvantages.
“I just believe the club should do what is best for them.”
“It will appeal to certain fans and, sadly, it will not appeal to others.” That’s just how things are sometimes.
“If we’re being honest, football and gambling go hand in hand, so it’s simply one of those things.”
“I don’t see why gambling sites shouldn’t be permitted to sponsor?”
“I understand about the ethics, but as I’ve mentioned, there are many other firms whose ethics might be called into question if you actually looked into it.”
The fact that the club was unable to resist the biggest offer on the table is indicative of the grave financial situation in which they have found themselves.
The Athletic claimed that a government ban was “unlikely,” but it’s not a good picture for the club at a time when the tide is turning against the fact that gambling is plastered all over sport and the consequences of addiction are receiving more attention.
“In an ideal scenario, moving forward, we would like to have a new sort of sponsor on the front of our jerseys,” Denise Barrett-Baxendale stated around the time the Toffees canceled their previous arrangement with Sport Pesa, according to The Athletic.
The club will have to find a way out of its current predicament, but there will be plenty of individuals who would rather they didn’t have to do it this way.
