Leeds United are likely to be charged by the Football Association after a fan shoved and abused Newcastle boss Eddie Howe on the touchline at Elland Road.

The man has been charged with assault by police and given a lifetime ban by the Premier League club.

He entered the technical area in stoppage-time of Saturday’s 2-2 draw before confronting Howe, who later said he felt his safety had been ‘violated’ and the incident left him wondering, ‘What if?’.

The FA will now speak to Leeds to determine how the fan was able to get so close to the opposition manager.

An FA spokesperson said: ‘We strongly condemn the incident involving a spectator during the Premier League fixture between Leeds United and Newcastle United.

‘The behaviour of this individual is unacceptable, and we will work together with the police, the relevant authorities and the clubs to ensure the appropriate action is taken.’

A statement from West Yorkshire Police read: ‘Police have charged a man with assault and entering the field of play. The man has been bailed to appear before magistrates on 21 July.’

Howe said: ‘It certainly makes you think, ‘What if?’. Moments like this should hopefully make people analyse things and see how we can improve safety for staff and players.

‘Those types of situation, no-one should have to face that, playing a sport they love and trying to entertain the country.

‘No-one should have to feel their own personal safety is violated. It’s something for us to reflect on.’
