Fabrizio Romano claims Englishman is set to sign four-year deal with Newcastle United
Newcastle United appear to have finally signed Brighton and Hove Albion Dan Ashworth to a long-term contract until 2026.
This is according to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, who reports that the trade is nearing completion.
Newcastle requested permission to speak with Ashworth in December, citing him as a top candidate for the position of director of football.
Other possibilities, such as Michael Emenalo and Ramon Planes, were mentioned, but Ashworth has been the frontrunner for a few months.
Later this month, Ashworth resigned from Brighton, with BBC Sport reporting that a transfer to Newcastle was in the cards.

Worryingly, The Athletic said that Ashworth’s value was vastly different between Newcastle and Brighton, implying that he may have been compelled to serve his notice term.
However, according to Romano, Ashworth is set to join Newcastle and will sign a four-year contract to take over at St James’ Park.
Ashworth is already concentrating on summer acquisitions for Newcastle, according to Romano, indicating that his transfer is now imminent.
Although Newcastle did add a Brighton player in January, it is believed that Ashworth was not involved in the negotiations for Dan Burn’s transfer.
What’s more intriguing is that Ashworth might already be planning his first transfer to Newcastle.
Newcastle is reportedly interested in acquiring Brighton’s academy coach, John Morling, according to the Daily Mail.

Morling and Ashworth have worked together for a lot of years, so a reunion in Newcastle makes sense.
Of course, the attention will be on signings and which players Ashworth can bring to Brighton, but the former FA director will be seeking to revamp Newcastle and get them going ahead in the same way he did with Brighton.
