Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy might still play for England in the World Cup this winter, according to Roy Hodgson.
The 35-year-old, who faces Hodgson’s Watford team today, retired from international football in 2018, after scoring seven goals in 26 outings.
Even though he has suffered with injuries this season, Vardy has remained a top Premier League striker and has continued to score goals.
Vardy’s speed, according to Hodgson, is a unique attribute, and with the World Cup commencing a week after the end of the season, he would be a good fit if other strikers were injured.

“Why not?” he said. Gareth (Southgate) and Steve Holland are notorious for following everything and everyone. They are not folks who have a plan.
“You retain an open mind, not writing anyone out, like I tried to do as England manager.” And Jamie has a distinct edge over other forwards in that what he contributes as a forward is frequently unique.
Gareth will be thinking about how they might still utilise him in specific games even if they didn’t bring him as their number one guy.
“So that doesn’t surprise me in the least.” I’m not sure if he’s retired for good or simply taking a break.

Between 2015 and 2016, Vardy won 14 caps under Hodgson, and the 74-year-old has fond memories of working with him.
“I mean, Jamie Vardy is a man that is exactly how he appears to be. It’s a case of zeal. It’s all about productivity. It’s about desire. “Of certainly,” he said.
“I mean, you don’t play for England unless you’re gifted.” But I found him to be a fantastic collaborator. Unfortunately, because his main skill is going in behind people and stretching defenses, we often played against crowded defenses with no space to run behind.
“However, I felt he played really well for England.” He scored a crucial goal against Wales that helped us advance to the next round. And I like working with him. I’m always happy to see him since he has that charming smile.
“And it’s a compliment to him that – well, perhaps a little like I was saying before – his early start meant that he got into the actual cauldron a little later.”
And he’ll bring the same boundless energy and vitality that he’s shown since the beginning. It also means he has had a long career.
“It appears he’s been wounded more this year.” I’m not sure what happened there. As far as I’m concerned, he could have easily remained out of this game. And I’m afraid he’s chosen to get himself ready.”
