Howe makes huge Newcastle January transfer statement that’ll leave fans delighted – opinion
Eddie Howe denied transfer rumour of a possible loan exit of Dubravka away from the club.
But make sure the Magpies goal keeper remains the club number one priority for the club, and hope possible changes in other areas of the club in the summer.
What’s all the fuss about?
Eddie Howe, the Magpies’ manager, has stated emphatically that the goalkeeper was not engaged in any discussions about a possible transfer for Dean Henderson last month.
“There was absolutely no truth in Martin Dubravka being offered to Manchester United from our side,” the 44-year-old told the Newcastle News & Star. That could not be further from the truth.”
It was earlier believed that the two teams were attempting to reach an agreement in which Dubravka would join Manchester United and Henderson would join St James’ Park on six-month loans. Those rumors have finally been debunked by Newcastle’s head coach.
Fans Delighted
Allowing the Slovakian to go midway through the campaign would have been disastrous for the Magpies, and Howe’s words will comfort fans that this was not a mistake they were willing to make.
The Newcastle number nine is in the 85th percentile for goals surrendered in compared to post-shot predicted goals in Europe’s top five leagues over the previous 12 months, a statistic that indicates how many goals a player stops with their shot-stopping skills.
Henderson, on the other hand, is in the 75th percentile, indicating that he is a poorer shot-stopper than the current Newcastle goalkeeper. Allowing Dubravka to go in January in return for the 24-year-old would have been a mistake, as the statistics do not indicate that the Englishman would be a significant upgrade.
But that’s not to suggest Henderson wouldn’t have been a good addition. He had a higher proportion of crosses saved and defensive actions outside of his penalty area than Dubravka, indicating that he might have done a better job as a sweeper ‘keeper.
If Dubravka had gone to Old Trafford, he might have generated serious rivalry for the number one place, but that would not have been the case with Darlow as his number two.
According to FBRef, the former Nottingham Forest player is in the first percentile for goals surrendered compared to post-shot predicted goals, indicating that he is one of Europe’s worst shot-stoppers.
