The Premier League’s investigation into Everton’s finances is not expected to return its verdict until October, sources have told Football Insider.

The Toffees were referred to an independent commission in March over potential breaches of the league’s profitability and sustainability guidelines.

It is alleged that the Merseyside club exceeded permitted losses of £105m per year over the four-season period ending with the 2021-22 campaign.

And they could face punishments ranging from a hefty fine to a points deduction should those allegations ultimately be proven.

The possibility of the latter penalty being handed out had prompted the clubs mired in this season’s relegation battle alongside Everton to request that the commission’s investigation be concluded by this month.

However, that request has been rejected, and Football Insider understands that the aggrieved parties have now been told not to expect a verdict until the autumn.

In the event of the Blues being found guilty, it remains to be seen which of their relegation rivals might choose to seek compensation through the courts.

Nottingham Forest’s stance is already thought to have softened after they secured safety, much as Leeds’ did once they avoided the drop in 2021-22.

But it is understood that Burnley, who were relegated after Everton’s unlikely escape under Frank Lampard last season, are still keen to pursue the case.

One potential barrier to sanctions from the Premier League is the possibility of the Toffees going down on what is sure to be a dramatic final day.

Sean Dyche‘s side remain at risk of being leapfrogged by either Leicester City or Leeds should they fail to beat Bournemouth at Goodison Park on Sunday.

And, while Premier League sources insist the independent commission would still complete its investigation, they are unlikely to have any powers to punish what would be an EFL club if a guilty verdict transpires.
