During an appearance on the LadBible TV YouTube channel, Jamie Carragher fought with Alan Shearer regarding Kieran Trippier’s status with the England side.
Shearer, a fan of Newcastle United, rightfully believes that Trippier should start for England in the World Cup.
Yet Carragher has a quite different point of view. The analyst doesn’t buy the claim that Trippier should play left back and feels he’s not as good as Kyle Walker and Trent Alexander-Arnold.
It’s clear that Carragher doesn’t agree with Shearer. The Sky commentator shared his thoughts on Trippier with Shearer.
Not at all, in my opinion. In my opinion, Kieran Trippier is a first-rate representative for the Premier League. These are the players he’ll have to deal with. Carragher boasted, “Kyle Walker has won several league championships, Trent Alexander-Arnold has won the Champions League, and Reece James has won the Champions League.”
“As a player, I enjoy Trippier, but I don’t get the left-back thing and have no idea where it came from. He’s a good Premier League player, but he doesn’t belong on the wing.
Trippier’s superiority over Walker and Alexander-Arnold as players is debatable, but his current form makes him the clearer choice.
Indeed, the Newcastle star has been outstanding in all facets of the game this season.
While Alexander-Arnold stumbled for Liverpool and Walker battled injury for Manchester City, the right back didn’t make a single mistake.
That’s why it’s not hard to argue that Trippier should start for England at the World Cup, and it’s likely that Gareth Southgate would agree with you.
It would come as no surprise if Trippier were to start in two weeks’ time when England plays Iran.
