James Rodriguez makes Everton return claim and Rafa Benitez transfer admission
James Rodriguez has stated that he would be interested in returning to Everton and that he wanted to stay at the club last summer.
Rodriguez was a big name signing for the Blues during the summer transfer window of 2020, as he reunited with Carlo Ancelotti for the third time.
Despite showing flashes of brilliance throughout his rookie season, Rodriguez’s future at the club was cast into doubt almost immediately after Ancelotti’s departure.
Following the arrival of Rafa Benitez, who had succeeded Ancelotti, the Colombian fell out of favor at Everton.
Not shortly after his arrival, Benitez informed the 30-year-old that he was free to quit the Goodison Park club if a good offer was presented.
Everton had wanted to use Rodriguez as a makeweight in a deal to transfer Luis Diaz from Porto to Goodison Park, but the two sides were unable to reach an agreement.
Rodriguez instead signed Qatari side Al-Rayyan for an unknown amount, leaving the Blues without having played in front of a crowd at Goodison Park.
Rodriguez has now spoken out about his time at Everton, revealing that he would be open to returning to the club and detailing how he was driven out by Benitez.
Return to Everton at some point? Of sure, I’d return to Everton. “I found a coach who didn’t want to depend on me,” he stated on Twitch. “It’s a wonderful club with incredible supporters, but I found a coach who didn’t want to count on me.”
“I wanted to stay, but the management didn’t want to take a chance on me.” I was super-professional and trained to the max till the very last day.
“I wanted to be recognized as the decent person and professional that I am.” It was a choice made by the coach. You must appreciate the fact that some people adore you and others do not.”
