It’s certainly too early to claim that we “dodged a bullet,” but it’s fair to say that West Ham supporters haven’t been impressed by Lucas Paqueta’s performance thus far.
Even though the Brazilian received a lot of attention since he was Bruno Guimaraes’ best friend, a number of publications revealed our interest in him throughout the summer. Nevertheless, he ultimately agreed to a late transfer to the London Stadium.
He has made five appearances for West Ham after agreeing to a £50 million club record transfer from Lyon, and based on what we’ve seen in games and what we’ve read on social media, he hasn’t had an easy transition to English football.
Forgetting the fact he’s yet to deliver a goal or an assist, Hammers fans have voiced concerns around him wanting too much time on the ball, feeling he’s looked ‘off the pace’, slow to react and lacking in quality.
Although it’s still early, I thought he played particularly poorly in both West Ham’s Europa Conference League victory against Silkeborg IF and loss at Everton. Does that imply that I’m glad we passed on signing him? It’s too soon to say, but if waiting meant we ended up signing James Maddison instead, I’d be happy we did!

The following are some remarks we discovered on Twitter after searching for his name and the West Ham hashtag:
He still believes he belongs in the French league. In the Prem, you don’t have much time to think!
Paqueta hasn’t been keeping up here. Always surrendering the ball or making a challenge a split second too late. He isn’t making up his mind before he gets the ball, he’s trying to when he has it. He won’t get that time.
Paqueta has so far displayed terrible body language. although it is still early, doesn’t seem Premier League-worthy.
Although it’s early, I don’t like what I’ve seen of Paqueta. clumsy both on and off the ball, poor quality, and appearing a little bewildered.
Paqueta appears to be a high-end player. was unsuccessful at AC Milan and a standout on a weak Lyon club. I’m concerned.
Overall, Paqueta was in terrible shape. He needs more time, for sure, but that performance lacked all originality. Doesn’t appear to be a player worth £50 million!
