Latest Arsenal News: More Issues for Arsenal as Fans react to Xhaka refusing to take captain’s band
supporters roars after Xhaka refuses to wear the captain’s armband.
Arsenal can never manage to go through a full football match without drama erupting from nowhere.
Mikel Arteta’s side looked completely at ease in their Premier League match against Brentford on Saturday, thanks to an early goal from Emile Smith Rowe and a second from Bukayo Saka to seal all three points.
However, five minutes from time, Alexandre Lacazette was substituted in place of Eddie Nketiah, forcing the French striker to hand over the captain’s armband, which he had been wearing throughout the game.
The armband was then taken by Nketiah, who imagined he would just hand it over to Granit Xhaka. That would have been fine if the midfielder hadn’t opted to turn it down on national television.
Kierney won it in the end, but the damage had already been done, and Arsenal fans turned to social media to express their displeasure.
Xhaka’s activities have gotten a lot of attention on Twitter.
Granit Xhaka was previously Arsenal’s captain, but he was demoted in 2019 after storming off the pitch upon being substituted and directing home fans to boo even louder at his request.
As a result, Xhaka was replaced as club captain by none other than Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who did not fare much better in the role and was stripped of his captaincy for poor off-the-field behavior before leaving the club in January.
Xhaka had captained the team in the first two Premier League games of the season, but based on his reaction to the armband on Saturday, it appears that the midfielder no longer wants to be a leader in the Arsenal dressing room.
