Callum Wilson is the undoubted first choice at St James’ Park, although he has been plagued by injuries since joining the club two years ago from Bournemouth.
Chris Wood, who joined the club in January, has similarly struggled to make an impression on Tyneside, scoring only one goal from open play in black-and-white.

Eddie Howe is thought to be keen on bolstering his front line options, and ChronicleLive believes Newcastle are in early discussions to recruit Reims teenager Hugo Ekitke.
Former defender Dabizas, though, feels Toon bosses should chase Calvert-Lewin, who carved his name into Geordie legend when he scored the winner against Sunderland 20 years ago.
He told Betarades, “Calvert-Lewin is a highly athletic and fit youngster.” “He has the capacity to adjust to English rhythm. From my perspective, I believe he would be the best choice.”
Wilson’s efforts towards the end of the season were also lauded by Dabizas, but he believes the Magpies will need more next season.
When he returned from a torn calf, the England international had an immediate impact on the team, scoring twice against Burnley on the last day.
“Of sure, he (Wilson) is one of the season’s major performers,” the 48-year-old continued. “He has a terrific rapport with the supporters, and if you want to progress as a team, you’ll always need a big squad to get greater results in the future. Newcastle must find a striker capable of scoring 20 goals every season. You must discover that type of player if you want to be a successful team.”
“Of course, Callum Wilson can contribute, but if someone (other) comes in, I believe that the players will profit from the competition, as will the club. For a season as competitive as this, you always need at least three attackers on the team.
