West Ham United may now consider ex-Everton manager Roberto Martinez as a potential option if they decide to sack David Moyes, according to journalist Dean Jones.
The Hammers manager has come under increasing pressure following an indifferent start to the Premier League season, which sees them sit just a point above the relegation zone.
The upcoming festive period is likely to decide the 59-year-old’s fate, with The Hammers facing Arsenal on Boxing Day before hosting Brentford on Friday 30 December.
And Jones believes that if a managerial change is made, they will consider the ex-Belgium and Everton manager Martinez as a replacement at the east London club.
He told GiveMeSport: “Of course, at the back of their minds, the club will have to be considering now what would happen next [if Moyes is sacked].
“Roberto Martinez as an option will be mentioned but how does he compare to other names that are going to be available in the market?”
Underwhelming
Although Martinez has a credible managerial CV, his recent exploits with the Belgium national team have left his reputation in tatters.
Although impressing with both Wigan and Everton in the Premier League, you wouldn’t say the Spaniard is a significant step up compared to Moyes.
His playing style with Belgium slowly decreased in excitement over time – starting as a flamboyant team, they eventually faded into a stale and laborious side.
The Spanish manager possessed the brightest crop of talent Belgium has ever produced – labelled the ‘golden generation’ – and to claim no silverware is a huge disappointment, considering the talent at his disposal.
For Moyes, the next three games will be crucial in deciding how long he remains at the East London club.
If he manages to raise his team from their slumber, he will remain at the helm, but if West Ham United continue to lurk on the edge of the relegation zone, Moyes’ days could be numbered.
