Howe buzzling
This news will excite Eddie Howe, the head coach of the Magpies, for a number of reasons.
First of all, he will be pleased with the speed at which Newcastle is working this summer to secure its goals. Pope is now expected to follow Matt Targett from Burnley in making a permanent transfer after spending the previous season on loan there from Aston Villa.
Newcastle has now made a proposal to acquire Botman as another member of the team, even though the latter has not yet been formally finished.
If they are successful in their swoops, Howe will have three fresh players to deal with when preseason officially begins.
The newcomers will have plenty of time to get to know their new teammates and integrate into the team, providing them the best chance to start the campaign strong.
Botman has the potential to be a fantastic addition, which will also excite the Magpies boss. The former Ajax player has demonstrated over the course of the previous two Ligue 1 seasons that, despite just being 22, he possesses the maturity and talent necessary to be a top performance.
In his first season in France, he made 37 appearances and had an average SofaScore rating of 7.08; he then made 25 starts in 2021/22 and had an average SofaScore rating of 7.10. No Newcastle center back averaged a rating greater than 6.98 in the PL season.
These numbers indicate that the Dutchman would be an improvement over the available options in his position at St. James’ Park, and he also has the potential to grow and develop even more over time given that he is still just starting his first-team career.
Howe will therefore be extremely pleased with the club’s efforts to sign Botman and will be hoping that a deal can be finalized in the coming days.
