Erik ten Hag, the new manager at Old Trafford, is willing to sell Bailly for a bargain, with French clubs Marseille and Lyon showing interest.
The Ivory Coast international, who joined United for £30 million from Villarreal in 2016, was Jose Mourinho’s first acquisition.
United are said to be willing to take as little as £8.5 million for Bailly, however a source close to his camp said they would want over £20 million.
Jurrien Timber, United’s center-back, has declined the club’s offer. Ten Hag had hoped that the Ajax defender would join him at Old Trafford, but the Dutchman has decided to stay in Amsterdam.
Timber was reportedly interested in joining United but was concerned about the amount of game time he would get, given the club’s preference for big-money defenders Harry Maguire and Raphael Varane.
This is in addition to Louis van Gaal’s admonition that anyone hoping to make his Netherlands World Cup team this year must play consistently.
Timber, as a result, has put any prospective move on hold in order to secure his spot in Qatar. It’s unclear whether United will pursue the 21-year-old again.
Ten Hag’s willingness to let Bailly depart this summer, on the other hand, speaks volumes about the Ivory Coast international’s future at the club. Bailly would follow the likes of Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic, and Juan Mata out the door this summer.
Meanwhile, despite Chelsea’s interest in Lazio free agent Thomas Strakosha, 27, who was close to joining Fulham, Newcastle are keeping an eye on him. Burnley’s Nick Pope has also been linked with a transfer as Eddie Howe seeks to replace Martin Dubravka.
The Magpies have yet to make any high-profile additions, opting instead to make Matt Targett’s loan from Aston Villa permanent for £15.7 million. Hugo Ekitike’s personal terms, on the other hand, have finally been agreed upon as the transfer date approaches.
