Both Dutchmen have been connected with the Magpies ahead of what is certain to be an intriguing transfer window on Tyneside.

Although the transfer market has yet to officially start, Newcastle United has already been connected with a number of well-known players.

Sven Botman is well-known to Toon fans, since his transfer issue has dominated the headlines on Tyneside since January, with Amanda Staveley even mentioning the Lille defender in a recent interview.

Botman confirmed the Magpies’ interest to Algemeen Dagblad in the Netherlands, although he remains indecisive about his future. Nathan Ake, a former Eddie Howe pupil, is another player who has been linked with a move to Newcastle.

Pep Guardiola no longer likes the Manchester City centre-back, clearing the path for a reunion with his previous boss. Three years before his £41 million move to the Etihad Stadium, Howe signed Ake from Chelsea.

Newcastle united News: Botman reveals what he wants in Dutch interview as Newcastle given fresh transfer hope

    Age

At 27, Ake is at the pinnacle of his career, whereas Botman is five years his junior. Both players have time on their side, but if he joins Newcastle, the latter may become a fixture for the next decade.

Ake had already won a call-up to the Netherlands side when he was Botman’s age. The rise of Virgil van Dijk, Stefan de Vrij, and Matthijs de Ligt, on the other hand, has made representing Holland significantly more difficult than it was five years ago.

    Cost

Botman (£27million) is somewhat more valuable than Ake (£22.5million) according transfermarkt.com because to his age.

Both Man City and Lille are in good situations since their contracts do not expire until 2025, implying that Newcastle will have to pay a significant cost.

Because he is the first-choice centre-back at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy, the French club will place a higher value on their asset than Ake, who has numerous star names ahead of him in the pecking order.

Despite falling out of favor under Guardiola, The Sun reports that City has put a £50 million price tag on the player. Given Newcastle’s opulent ownership, it looks that other teams are eager to cash in on their newfound fortune.

Botman’s worth has been estimated to be between £35 million and £50 million. The Magpies will have to get their checkbook out if they want to attract either.

    Achievements

When it comes to awards, Ake beats Botman since he has played for more prestigious clubs. As a part-time player, he won two Premier League crowns, two EFL Cups, and two Europa League trophies.

Botman has only won the Ligue 1 title in his brief career, but the fact that he was a key player in the team’s victory over PSG adds to the significance of his success.

However, as a kid, Ake won the U17 European Championship twice and has 26 senior appearances, demonstrating Botman’s international capabilities.

    Style of play

Both players are left-footed and play at centre-back, but that’s where the similarities end. Botman, at 6ft 5in, is a monster in the air and is regarded as the defensive “stopper” in transition. Ake, on the other side, is just 5ft 11in tall, which is why Guardiola uses him as a left-back on occasion.

Botman has never played in a three-man backline, whereas the former Bournemouth man feels at ease in a back three or four. Pace, in contrast to height and heading ability, is considered Ake’s strength and Botman’s weakness.

The latter would almost certainly need to play alongside a more agile defender, but as Dan Burn has demonstrated, towering, commanding centre-backs can still succeed in the Premier League.

Neither player has any issues playing out from the back, which is unsurprising considering Howe’s defensive philosophy. Botman may need some time to acclimate to the rigors of Premier League play, whereas Ake is already used to them.

Legendary Dutch defenders of the past, on the other hand, feel he has the potential to be great. Former Manchester United striker Jaap Stam gushed about Botman to Gazzetta dello Sport, underlining the view that the 22-year-old is a long-term investment. “Whoever gets Sven is in for a long time; he will become one of Europe’s top centre-backs,” he remarked.
