Nigeria vs Ghana: Christian Chukwu questions Eguavoen role over AFCON tactics
Christian Chukwu, a former Nigeria coach, has questioned Augustine Eguavoen’s match-reading abilities.
Chukwu chastised the Super Eagles temporary Technical Adviser for failing to adjust his tactics against Tunisia in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, which resulted in the team’s elimination.
The 1980 AFCON-winning captain, on the other hand, noted that Eguavoen has come a long way as a coach since they last worked with eight years ago.
At the 2004 Afcon, Chukwu was the Super Eagles’ head coach, while Eguavoen was his assistant. Nigeria won bronze.
Eguavoen will remain with the national squad for next month’s 2022 World Cup playoffs against Ghana, although Emmanuel Amuneke has been added to the coaching staff.
Chukwu has urged Eguavoen to keep improving ahead of the key two-legged ties.
“From his experience as an assistant coach with me, he (Eguavoen) has grown into a lot better coach.
“He has greater experience and has worked with good teams.
“However, I believe he made a tactical error against Tunisia in the round of 16; he might have modified his tactics.”
“I think he only has to work on his match-reading ability a little bit more and he’ll be a great coach,” Chukwu told the New Telegraph.
