Tuesday night’s USMNT friendly against Saudi Arabia ended in a 0-0 tie, and despite Tyler Adams playing the whole 90 minutes for his country, the US media have criticised the Leeds United midfielder.
The 23-year-old Adams has adapted well to life at Elland Road. He joined the team from RB Leipzig, and since playing alongside Marc Roca in the middle of the park, he has won the admiration of many supporters.
He has, however, had to face a trying international break. Japan defeated the USMNT 2-0 last week. One publication awarded Adams a grade of merely 4.5 and labelled him as “limited.” It was a subpar performance, but they had the opportunity to put it right.
The US was the favourite to defeat Saudi Arabia when they travelled to Spain. However, despite having more possession, they were unable to overwhelm their rivals. Adams received more criticism for his performance as the MLS website issued a player ratings piece.

His rating from the MLS was 5/10: “Adams did what Adams does. Ground covered, repurposed possession, and outspoken leader. While circling wide, he really battled to take down Saudi Arabia when a more daring pass would have been rewarded.
Gregg Berhalter’s US team ought to have won against a team that had not scored in their previous three international contests. But since it was flat, the USMNT eventually only managed to get two attempts on goal.
Adams doesn’t really perform at his best in this kind of game. The Leeds player performs better in contests where his team is behind. Ask Chelsea where the opposing team has greater possession. In the 3-0 victory, he was outstanding.
Leeds will be praying that Adams can get past this. The good news is that he played for 90 minutes once again, twice in as many days, without showing any signs of injury. On Sunday, he will start the game against Aston Villa.
