Gianluca Scamacca’s injury has put £95 million worth of West Ham players on the sidelines for the World Cup.
Maxwel Cornet, a summer transfer who cost West Ham and manager David Moyes £17.5 million, has been sidelined with a calf injury since early October.
Moyes suggested the Ivory Coast superstar should return after the World Cup break, which would put him out for three months after experiencing a setback in his recuperation.
As Cornet sat out the loss to Leicester with a hamstring injury, £29 million defender Kurt Zouma limped off with knee worries.
After Zouma complained of knee stiffness during pregame warmups, West Ham’s medical staff “flushed” it, as Moyes stated.
There hasn’t been any news since, so hopefully it wasn’t too bad and the break came at a good time for the cast.
Yet another £13.5m summer signing A broken nose forced Emerson Palmieri to withdraw from consideration for international service with Italy.
Italy compatriot and another summer signing for West Ham, Gianluca Scamacca, has also been called up to play in the Azzurri’s friendlies against Albania and Austria.
According to TMW, though, he has also just left the team.
As a result of Scamacca’s injury, £95 million worth of West Ham players will be resting in the locker room during the intermission.
TMW has claimed that Scamacca has departed Italy’s Coverciano camp and would thus miss the next week of friendly matches.
The West Ham forward has a “small physical condition,” according to his team’s statement, and he plans to take the six-week layoff to get back in shape.
West Ham may have been lucky with the timing of the series of injuries to many important players.
We can only pray that the Hammers are at full strength when the Premier League season resumes on Boxing Day away at league leaders Arsenal.
