Ollie Watkins of Aston Villa has struggled this season, but Steven Gerrard will back him to get back on track.
Ollie Watkins of Aston Villa has failed to duplicate the form he displayed in his Premier League debut this season, but he has Steven Gerrard’s complete support.
Watkins has only scored three goals under Gerrard since the former Rangers boss came at Villa Park, and has scored five goals in total this season, four fewer than he did in his opening 20 appearances last season.
He started all but one of Gerrard’s first 12 games, as he was unavailable for the trip to Brentford in January.
Watkins led the Premier League with 14 goals last season, earning him a call-up to the England national team in March 2021.
He was given four further caps after scoring against San Marino on his Three Lions debut, but he was not selected for England’s November internationals.
Gerrard said in December that Villa forward may push his way back into Gareth Southgate’s plans before the 2022 World Cup.
“Working with him has been a pleasure, and I’m looking forward to the future.” Gerrard stated, “I’m happy to have him here.”
“All Ollie needs to do now for Aston Villa is be the best he can be, and I’m confident that will be enough to get him back into the England group, and I’m sure Gareth Southgate will be keeping a close eye on him.”
“However, the greatest way to break into England squads is to be consistent and perform your best for your club, which Ollie is doing.”
Gerrard also does not want to limit Watkins’ potential, saying: “Ollie, in my opinion, has no bounds.
“He’ll mature, and he’ll appreciate the way we play, so there’s no ceiling for him.”
