latest Chelsea news: Struggled in the Last Few Games -Tuchel Reveals Lukaku is mentally and physically tired
Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has admitted that striker Romelu Lukaku is ‘both psychologically and physically’ exhausted.
The Blues midfielder was left out of the starting XI for Tuesday’s Champions League match against Lille, which they won 2-0 at Stamford Bridge.
Kai Havertz took his spot as striker, and the German scored the game’s opening goal barely eight minutes into the first half.
Tuchel said to the reporters after the game, through football.london, that Lukaku is exhausted following a poor run of form for the Belgian.
Every game is unique. Today’s emphasis was on high-intensity play and a fast-paced game.
It was all about putting in long hours against the ball, off the ball, and working as a team. Romelu has struggled to produce that in the previous several games.
“That’s what I meant when I said he seemed mentally and physically fatigued.
Since the Liverpool game, he has started every match, with a few exceptions. Yes, it’s the same way.
“We went after three additional guys today, with Kai in terrific form, extremely confident, and putting in a lot of effort in high-intensity meters for the team.”
He also speculated on whether the 28-year-old will start in Sunday’s Carabao Cup final, in which Chelsea takes on Liverpool at Wembley in the hopes of winning their third trophy of the season.
“Yes, the team’s choice does not have to be taken immediately, but rather within the following four days. Lukaku has a good chance of playing.”
