Steven Gerrard is poised to make changes this weekend as he attempts to break Aston Villa’s worrying run of defeats, with his team having won just once in their past seven games.
Following Villa’s dreadful 1-0 loss to Newcastle on Sunday, the head coach slammed his players for failing to get out of first gear.
“Look, we need to develop as a team,” Gerrard grumbled. “We have a lot of work ahead of us.”

“Given our level of play, we didn’t deserve anything from the game.” That is obvious to me, and certain team adjustments are also required.”
As Newcastle cruised to win at St James’ Park, the great majority of people in attendance appeared disorganized and uninterested.
SportEarly looks at people who might be pulled out of the firing line to allow others a chance to shine in terms of adjustments…
John McGinn
On Sunday, the Scot was off the boil – but at least he made a valiant effort to get things moving. McGinn, who shone in the 1-0 win against Everton before the Christmas break, has had two back-to-back no-shows, but with the paucity of alternatives in that midfield area, there’s every chance he’ll be given another shot this weekend against Watford.
Carney Chukwuemeka is a possible replacement.

Douglas Luiz
Given Gerrard’s rage at the Brazilian’s habit of playing backwards much too often, he’s one of the team’s favorites to emerge victorious. On Sunday, Douglas was ineffective and provided little protection for the back four.
Douglas has played in the previous nine games and might need a break from the starting lineup.
Morgan Sanson is a possible replacement.
Matty Cash
The Polish international’s last ball and decision-making in the closing third continues to be a liability for Villa, as seen by his 65 percent pass accuracy against Newcastle.
Cash also threw the ball away 11 times, and it’s unclear whether he’ll be one of the starters this weekend, or whether Gerrard will dare him to prove his critics wrong.
Cash has started all 23 Premier League games for Villa this season.
Ashley Young / Calum Chambers are two possible replacements.

Watkins, Ollie
Watkins has now gone six games without a goal after VAR overturned his header on Sunday. Watkins’ body language has been all over the place lately, and his performances have been a far cry from what he was last season.
Danny Ings is a possible replacement
