Thomas Tuchel needs an attacking change at Chelsea to win Premier League

As Thomas Tuchel prepares to make adjustments for next year’s Premier League championship, the Blues lag both Manchester City and Liverpool in a crucial offensive category.

Chelsea was anticipated to fight for the Premier League championship this season.

And, after a strong start to the season, they were in contention early on, only to have their form deteriorate in December and January, putting them well behind leaders Manchester City.

The Blues are 16 points behind Pep Guardiola’s team, despite having a game in hand, and their search for another Premier League title appears certain to go at least another year.

Thomas Tuchel led Chelsea to the Champions League victory last season and has already won the Club World Cup this year, making him the first Chelsea manager to accomplish it.

Tuchel will be charged with winning the Premier League next season, after spending £97.5 million on Romelu Lukaku in the summer to address the club’s biggest issue position.

Injuries to Ben Chilwell and Reece James this season, two key wing-backs in Tuchel’s system at Stamford Bridge, haven’t helped things, and the head coach will be looking to Marina Granovskaia and Roman Abramovich to provide the finances he needs to reinforce his team next season.

But research by Statsbomb shows that it is in the forward areas where Chelsea really need to improve to reach the levels set by Manchester City and their closest challengers Liverpool.

The football statistics experts have looked at the number of players that are in the box when a shot is taken for all the teams in Europe’s big five leagues.

And the numbers are quite something.

Liverpool average around 2.5 players in the box for six open play shots per game. Manchester City meanwhile average almost 2.7 players in the box for around 5.5 shots per game from open play.

Only Bayern Munich, with 2.9 players in the box and more than seven open play shots per game, outperforms those two clubs in Europe.

    So, how does Chelsea fare?

Unfortunately, they’re in a pack with a lot of other teams, with roughly 2.3 players in the box for slightly over four shots per game from open play.

If the Blues are to challenge the Reds and Citizens for the Premier League crown next season, Tuchel will want to see more players in and around the penalty area.
