Following Steven Gerrard’s decision to take over as Aston Villa manager for the next Premier League season, Tyrone Mings issued a dignified statement.
Gerrard has finally decided who will become the captaincy permanently, and John McGinn will now don the armband. Ashley Young will serve as the club captain while Emi Martinez will serve as vice-captain.
Mings no longer has any official leadership responsibilities after taking over as captain last summer after Jack Grealish left the team.

Mings, an English international, has subsequently released a social media message in response to the news. “For me, this isn’t about John or I; it’s about what’s right for Aston Villa,” the defender said on Twitter.
I have no issues with the managers decision; I’ve loved leading this team. Anyone who knows @jmcginn7 knows how infectious he is and it will be an honour to play underneath his captaincy.”
Mings may play less minutes next season as a result of Diego Carlos’ £26 million signing, while Calum Chambers and Ezri Konsa compete to be the Brazilian’s partner. Given that he was given the captaincy, it appears like McGinn will play frequently for Gerrard in the upcoming campaign.
This weekend, Villa will make their final preseason trip to Stade Rennais before beginning their new Premier League campaign the following Saturday against Bournemouth.
