Following the departure of Fabio Silva, Wolverhampton Wanderers may make an unexpected move to sign Christian Benteke from Crystal Palace.
According to The Sun, Bruno Lage is contemplating the former Liverpool and Aston Villa player after the black and gold allowed 20-year-old Silva to join Anderlecht on a season-long loan.
The 31-year-old Benteke has been a member of Palace since 2016, but he recently lost first-choice status as a result of the signings of Odsonne Edouard and Jean-Philippe Mateta.
The Belgian wouldn’t be assured first-team action in front of Raul Jimenez, as he wasn’t at Selhurst Park, but Wolves’ dearth of choices would provide him more playing time, which might convince him to return to the West Midlands.
The 31-year-old, who only has one year left on his current contract, made 31 appearances for Palace last season and contributed one assist along with four goals.
Clauss But No Cigar
Elsewhere and Wolves’ pursuit of Lens full-back Jonathan Clauss, if there ever was one, appears to have ended before it even really began.
The right-sided defender is reportedly close to joining Lens’ Ligue 1 rivals Marseille for a whopping €11 million, according to L’Equipe.
Even as late as Monday night, it was reported that the 29-year-old and Manchester United were in “advanced negotiations,” but it now seems unlikely that Clauss will be moving to England this summer to play for the black and gold or the red of Manchester.
For the price that was paid, it is surprising that Wolves didn’t pursue this position a little bit more. Right-back is another position where Wanderers will be woefully understaffed at the start of the 2022–2023 season.
