Newcastle United hopes to maintain its unblemished start to the season against Wolves tonight.
Of course, for fans, a trip away from home involves much more than just the 90 minutes; it also involves arriving well before kickoff, consuming as many pre-game refreshments as possible, and possibly sticking around after the game to socialise with the locals and enjoy a few more drinks before returning home.
Make a weekend out of it, if the location is truly great. Enjoy travelling to a different city or town and treating it more as a weekend getaway, with football being just one aspect of it.
Greg McPeake wrote a fantastic essay on The Mag on Saturday in which he stated that he was not bothering with Wolves this time around due to the (lack of) welcome he had previously received. Despite the fact that he was trying to find a place to dine and drink with his small kid, several establishments turned them away.
Although it was amusing, Greg must have exaggerated to make his writing more readable.
Well, I only saw this on Sunday morning.

“The BlueBrick PH is the only pub that will take away fans, WV1 1AA. “Located behind the train station, free entry and small fee for parking.

Compare that to the last time Newcastle played Forest, which was three weeks ago.
NUFC Police Department (This Twitter feed is for the provision of information and advice from Northumbria Police to Newcastle Utd and visiting fans in the build-up to Football matches) Twitter profile – August 5, 2022:
Football has returned. Greetings to the Nottingham Forest supporters visiting Newcastle United this weekend.
Over those staying for the weekend, take advantage of the hospitality.
Newcastle doesn’t have any designated ‘away’ bar.
Away fans are welcome to have a drink anywhere in the City because the majority of bars are mixed.
There are over 108 pubs within a half-mile of St James Park, although away supporters frequently visit The Gunner Tavern, The Victoria Comet, Milecastle, The Gate Complex, and The Hustle for pre-match refreshments.

Sorry, but if I were a Wolves supporter or even just a random Wolverhampton native, I would be ashamed of this.
This “welcome” is given to football supporters who travel to Wolves in the year 2022.
I’ve lost count of the amount of away supporters I’ve read about who list Newcastle as both their favourite weekend destination and the location they’d do everything to remain… However, I have never once heard somebody recommend visiting Wolves or Wolverhampton and spending your summer vacation there if at all feasible.
Hmmm. I’m curious as to why it would be.
Bars Galore conducted crucial study in 2019 to determine which football team has the most pubs around the stadium.
It displayed the number of pubs that were within half a mile of each stadium.
There are no rewards for figuring out which team or city came out on top, but just take a look at number two.
The English football clubs with most pubs within a half mile radius:
108 Newcastle United 32 Newport County 29 Ipswich Town 26 Blackpool 22 Chelsea 21 Arsenal 20 Mansfield Town 19 Sheffield United 18 Everton 17 Brentford 17 Burnley 17 Norwich City 16 Port Vale 16 Queens Park Rangers 15 Exeter City 15 Liverpool 14 Nottingham Forest 14 Swansea City 13 Bristol City 13 Crewe Alexandra
As a result, only one (ONE!) Wolves bar welcomes visiting fans, despite the fact that NUFC has more nearby.
Shamefully hang your heads.
By the way, a 2019 study found that if the radius was increased to a mile, Sheffield United’s proximity to the city centre increased its numbers to 134.
With 174 pubs within a mile, Newcastle United was still much ahead of that.
